U14 hockey report

Yesterday the u14a hockey team travelled to Harleston Magpies HC to play in the East tier 3 finals. They went into the match after beating King’s Peterborough 12-1 before half term and so were full of confidence and motivated to do well.

The first match was against Coopers Coborn school from Essex. We started a little slowly but soon picked up the pace, attacking down both sides of the pitch and dominating possession. We won a short corner quite early in the game and Jemima Mitchell opened the scoring after a great injection by Evie Brown. We scored a second goal after Rose Smith took the ball strongly in defence, sent a great pass to Robyn Thorp, who crossed the ball into the D for Millie Harris to slot away. We were pleased with the 2-0 victory, however, we knew we could play with greater intensity and move the ball at a faster pace.

The second match was against Archbishop Sancroft school from Harleston. They were a strong team and put in some great tackles. In this game, Robyn Thorp scored first with an impressive solo effort, running the ball through the centre of the pitch into the D and finishing off calmly.Robyn also scored the second goal after we cleared the ball away after defending a penalty corner. Tiana Muzuva found herself driving the ball through midfield and after slipping it to Robyn, we were 2-0 up.Evie Brown then completed the score with a goal from a penalty corner. The team really improved their performance in this match, with everyone playing their part.

The third match started in the pouring rain but the team showed resilience and kept up the momentum. This game was a rematch against King’s Peterborough. They made it very tough for us and played well, but a great cross by Robyn found Millie in the right place in the D to take a first time shot. We won the game 1-0 and three games in, we were pleased with our clean sheet, thanks to some great defending by Emily Wring and Emilia Chrapko.

Florence Chrapko at GK was called into action in the 4th game against Queenswood. She made 2 excellent saves, kicking the ball clear and sending the midfield on an attack. This game was outstanding, with Emilia Chrapko scoring a hat trick, one goal of which was a solo effort after sprinting to keep the ball on. Millie Harris also added another 2 goals to her tally, and Robyn and Jemima both scored, making the final scoreline 7-0.

We knew that if we won the final match against Gresham’s B team, we would win the tournament. This didn’t daunt the team at all and we started with intensity, moving the ball around at pace and defending and attacking well. Emilia opened the scoring, followed by 2 excellent goals by Jemima, anther goal by Emilia and the final goal was scored by Evie Brown.

The team were ecstatic at their performance and we were presented with medals and a cup. They thoroughly deserved their success and showed that effort and supportive team work are so important to performing well. They were a credit to Wisbech Grammar School and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout. We will be going into the match against Kimbolton on Saturday full of confidence and look forward to having the full 11 a side team on the pitch. Thanks to Mrs Eggleton for umpiring.
