Wisbech Grammar School U15X1 v Oundle U16 B

Match Report
Wisbech Grammar School Girls-U15A vs Oundle School
On: Saturday, 23 Sep 17
Venue: Away

In developing a fixture list that offers both challenging and competitive games, this fixture against an Oundle U16B fell into the challenging column. Whilst there are match reports which comment 'it was a game of two halves', this match was effectively a game of 'never say never' for the WGS side.

Playing a four quarters match, WGS started well, scoring a goal within the first minute. Oundle equalised soon after, then took the lead after a series of missed tackles allowed the centre-half to set up their centre-forward to score. First quarter done. Despite their efforts the WGS struggled throughout the 2nd & 3rd quarters to gain a foothold in the game, with Oundle scoring a further two goals. WGS did manage to score a second goal in the last minute of the quarter, leaving the game at 4-2 in favour of Oundle as the teams entered the last quarter.

The theme continued with WGS chasing the game. Into the last 3 minutes and with the game getting stretched, WGS managed to score their third goal, closely followed by a fourth. A final attack with 15 seconds to go, saw WGS awarded a penalty corner, the result of which was Lily Amps sneaking the ball in at the far post, leaving the game 5-4 in favour of WGS.

Not a pretty game, but one that hopefully the squad will have learnt from in terms of having to work hard when they don't have the ball, soaking up the pressure. Credit to them though for never giving up.
